Transplant Story

Chantel Memziwe

I was diagnosed Feb 2017, with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma stage 4 cancer.  I had 6 months of chemotherapy before my scans were clear at the end of August 2017. In June 2020, I discovered that my spleen was enlarged. Intensive chemotherapy started again until January 2021 when I had a bone marrow transplant on 26 January 2021. My older sister was my donor. I started running in 2004 and I discovered a love for it. I ran during chemotherapy even participating in the Virtual Cape Town Marathon in October 2020. Being active has helped my body to recover and it has mentally assisted me to deal with everything that happened. Running is my go-to activity whenever I need to deal with the stresses of life and chasing the runner’s high is everything.
